Soybean Inoculants: When Are They Worth It?
When soybean inoculants are worth the cost—new ground, long rotations, and how to judge nodulation after emergence.
What inoculants are supposed to do
Soybean inoculants supply Bradyrhizobium bacteria that enable nodulation and biological nitrogen fixation. On ground that regularly grows soybeans with good nodulation history, native populations may already be adequate.
On new soybean ground, long gaps between soybean crops, or fields with poor nodulation history, inoculants are more likely to pay.
How to evaluate value
Dig plants after establishment and check nodule number and color. Poor nodulation plus pale plants is a signal to review inoculant quality, handling, seed treatment compatibility, and soil conditions.
Store and apply inoculants per label—heat and age kill live products fast.
Make the call with field history
If you are asking whether soybean inoculants are worth it, bring rotation history and nodulation notes. Roush Ag Solutions can help you explore related plant nutrition products and pricing for your soybean program.
